Benedict Cumberbatch’s appearance in the BBC show “Sherlock” has been many younger fans’ introduction to the world of Sherlock Holmes. Cumberbatch plays the titular Sherlock and is joined by Martin Freeman as Dr. John Watson. The show, and Cumberbatch’s portrayal of Sherlock Holmes in particular, have developed a particularly strong online following on Tumblr. Cumberbatch was appointed a Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire in 2015 in recognition of his contributions to charity and the performing arts.
